INTRODUCTION

If you have purchased this e-book, it is no doubt because either you or someone you love is suffering from depression or anxiety. I understand. I know what it is like to feel the despair, the torment, the hopelessness of major depression. Over the past three decades I have had four major depressive episodes and yet I have survived. My message is that you can heal, too.

      In seeking a way to heal from my depression, I came to develop a "better mood" recovery program that employs a "holistic," multi-modal approach to lifting one's mood.    Over the next twelve years I taught these principles in depression support groups and saw that when people applied the principles, they got well. Eventually, I shared what I had learned in my print book; Healing From Depression: 12 Weeks to a Better Mood, which was published in December 2002.

Then, in 2010, I created an online newsletter where I took the recovery program and rewrote it as a series of 50 “e-tips.” Now I have decided to compile these practical tools and coping strategies into this e-book. Although these e-tips  are designed to help you to improve your mood, they are meant to support, not replace, any mental health treatment that you may be receiving. Therefore, if you are severely depressed or anxious, it is essential that you continue to see a psychiatrist (or medication prescriber) as well as a counselor.

Finally, although the material I present focuses on healing from depression, these principles are universal and can be applied to similar chronic mental/emotional disorders--such as addiction and eating disorders. It is my deepest wish that the lessons I learned from my suffering and the information contained in this book may give you the motivation, knowledge and inspiration to pursue your own recovery.
